Dire Straits by Candlelight

Dire Straits by Candlelight

A candlelit concert series across unique venues, balancing historic challenges with premium audio and atmosphere.

The Dire Straits by Candlelight series set out to reimagine the legendary music of Mark Knopfler and his band in intimate, atmospheric settings. With performances staged in Newcastle Cathedral, Birmingham Conservatoire, and Weston-super-Mare Pier, the tour combined iconic music with a visual identity shaped by candlelight. For Eventech, the challenge lay in preserving the character of each historic or sophisticated venue while delivering a consistently high level of audio and production value.

Every venue came with its own complexities. Newcastle Cathedral remains a working cathedral, with its own limitations on rigging, acoustics, and access. Birmingham Conservatoire, by contrast, is ahigh-specification performance space, demanding production standards that matched the expectations of a world-class venue. Weston-super-Mare Pier added another layer of complexity, with its open-air position, constant public access, and the inherent challenges of staging on a working pier. For Eventech, each setting required careful planning, flexibility, and a technical approach that respected the venue while delivering for the audience.

To achieve the highest audio quality, Eventech deployed Yamaha consoles at the heart of the system. These provided reliable, transparent control across each performance, while full in-ear monitoring ensured the musicians had clarity and precision in every environment. In most shows, Eventech supplied and managed its own d & b PA system, chosen for its ability to deliver detailed, powerful sound in acoustically challenging spaces. Six lines of delay were strategically placed to ensure that every member of the audience, from front row to back, experienced the same impact and clarity.

The visual design was understated yet essential. Eventech provided basic lighting to highlight performers and enhance atmosphere without overwhelming the candlelit aesthetic. The centre piece was the installation of more than one thousand electronic candles, carefully positioned to transform each venue into a shimmering, intimate setting. This combination of light and shadow created the perfect backdrop for the music, enhancing the emotional connection between audience and performance.

Delivering such an experience required more than equipment. It demanded Eventech’s boutique approach, one built on creativity, adaptability, and meticulous attention to detail. Each venue’s restrictions were treated not as obstacles but as opportunities to innovate. The team worked closely with venue staff, respecting the historic and functional needs of each space while ensuring that the show was delivered to the highest standard.

For audiences, the result was unforgettable. The combination of timeless songs, world-class musicianship, and an environment bathed in candlelight created a sense of magic that transcended the typical concert format. For Eventech, it was a showcase of what can be achieved when technical excellence meets creativity in challenging spaces. The success of Dire Straits by Candlelight demonstrated that even in venues with the most complex demands, Eventech has the expertise to deliver seamless, high-end experiences that leave a lasting impression.
